File system
A file system is the way in which files are named and where
they are placed logically for
storage and retrieval.
Without a file system, information placed in a storage area
would be one large body of data
with no way to tell where one piece of
information stops and the next begins
Network File System (NFS)
· NFS is a client/server
application that lets a computer user view and optionally store and update file
on a remote computer.
· The user's system needs to
have an NFS client and the other computer needs the NFS server.
· Both
of them require that you also have TCP/IP installed since the NFS server and
client use TCP/IP as the program that sends the files and updates back and
forth.
·NFS is Any computer file
system that supports sharing of files and other resources as persistent storage
over a computer network
·First
file servers were developed in the 1970s,
·In
1985 Sun Microsystems created the Network File System (NFS)
Network
file system protocol
· Allows a user on a client
computer to access files over a network As if the network devices were attached
to its local disks
·NFS builds on the Open
Network Computing Remote Procedure Call (ONC RPC) system
·The
Network File System protocol is specified in
·RFC
1094, RFC 1813, and RFC 3530
Platforms
* NFS most commonly used with UNIX systems
* Other software platforms such can also use
the protocol
* Mac OS, Microsoft Windows, Novell NetWare,
and IBM AS/400
Alternative remote file access protocols
include:
* Server Message Block (SMB, also known as
CIFS) protocol
* Apple Filing Protocol (AFP)
* NetWare Core Protocol (NCP)
* SMB and NetWare Core Protocol (NCP) are most
common on Microsoft Windows
* AFP is most common on Macintosh systems
Network File System
Network File Systems allow the users files
to “migrate” from workstation to workstation with them.
Network File Systems simplify life for the
user, but generally make system administration more complicated (due to the
setup costs).
NFS has
two components
· The server side software,
and the client side software.
·Each component is actually a suite of programs
which implement the sockets required to
provide network based file systems.
·NFS is stateless.
Network File Sharing
Permissions
·Under NFS, the user (or
administrator) can assign access permissions to directories, and to the files
within those directories.
· Under Windows, the
permissions cover the directory. Files
within a directory inherit the permissions of the directory.
· Shared folder permissions
only apply to the folder when it is accessed via the network.
·The
local permissions pertain when accessing files locally on the server.
